Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often, covering Memorials, Aftercare, pricing, privacy, and more. If you cannot find what you need, we are here to help.

Getting started

How do I create an account?

Simply select the plan that fits your needs, whether that’s a Memorial or Aftercare support. You will be prompted to enter your name and email address to create an account. You can start setting up right away with just a few basic details.

What is the difference between Memorial and Aftercare?

A Memorial gives you a dedicated, permanent online space to share memories, stories, photos, and videos of your loved one, along with tributes from family and friends.

Aftercare includes the full Memorial plus step-by-step practical, legal, and administrative guidance to help you navigate everything that comes after a loss. As well as an emotional support programme built by Ireland’s leading grief specialist — Liz Gleeson.

I have forgotten my password.

On the login page, select "Forgotten password" and enter your email address. We will send you a link to set a new one.

How do I get in touch?

You can reach our team by emailing hello@thesolace.com, and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Do I have to fill out the memorial or start the aftercare tasks immediately?

Not at all. There is no expiry date or time limit. You, or the person you gift it to, can set up the page and access aftercare resources whenever you feel ready.

How does gifting a Memorial or Aftercare plan work?

You can purchase a plan as a gift voucher, which can be delivered digitally to the recipient or emailed to you to share personally. The recipient can create their account privately, and they will never see payment details or receipts.

Memorials

What is a Memorial on The Solace?

A Memorial is a dedicated page for someone who has died. Family and friends can add photos, write tributes, light a candle, and share memories in one place. Anyone you invite can contribute.

How do I create a Memorial?

Choose a plan, create an account, then add the person's name and dates to begin. You can add photos and a biography straight away, and invite others once the page is live. You can get started with your memorial here.

Can more than one person manage the Memorial?

Yes. Invite multiple co-administrators to help manage the memorial, while family and friends can contribute photos, videos, stories and tributes as it grows over time.

How many photos can I add?

The free plan includes a gallery of up to five photos. Upgrading to a premium Memorial lifts this to unlimited photo and video uploads.

How do I invite family and friends?

Once the Memorial is live, you can share its link with anyone you would like to contribute. They can add tributes, photos, and memories, and light a candle.

How do donations work on The Solace?

You can choose from over 6,000 Irish charities as the partner charity for your loved one's Memorial page. Through our partnership with iDonate, we ensure secure and seamless charitable donations for those who wish to support the family according to their wishes. Once you select your chosen charity, visitors can easily make secure donations to that cause.

Can I make my Memorial private?

By default, free Memorials are public and displayed on thesolace.com, so family and friends can easily find and share memories. If you prefer a private sanctuary, you can upgrade to a paid Memorial and unlock our full privacy controls, allowing you to restrict access and control who can view or contribute at any time.

Will my Memorial always be available?

Free memorials are hosted and editable for 1 year. After 12 months, the memorial becomes static (view-only) and remains hosted on the platform as a lasting memorial, but can no longer be edited unless upgraded. Upgrading to a paid memorial unlocks lifetime editing and guarantees perpetual hosting.

Can I upgrade to Aftercare later?

Yes. You can upgrade at any time to access practical guidance, trusted resources and emotional support while keeping the same memorial.

Aftercare

What is the Aftercare programme?

Aftercare brings together practical support for the period after a death, including guidance on estate administration, closing accounts, and organising important documents, alongside an emotional support programme developed by Liz Gleeson, Ireland’s leading grief specialist. It also includes a secure document vault, a list of trusted service providers, and a quiet space for reflection whenever you need it.

What is Understanding Grief?

Understanding Grief is level one psychoeducation developed by Ireland’s leading grief specialist, Liz Gleeson. It offers grounded, compassionate support for living with loss through short-form video content and written articles.

Do I need a Memorial to use Aftercare?

No. Aftercare can be used on its own. Many people use it alongside a Memorial, but neither depends on the other.

Do I need to complete everything at once?

No. Aftercare is designed to support you at your own pace. Your personalised checklist helps you prioritise what needs to be done first, and you can return to guidance and resources whenever you're ready.

How long can I access Aftercare?

Aftercare isn’t a subscription. Once you’ve paid for it, it’s yours for life, so you can return to your guidance, resources, and Memorial whenever you need them, with no recurring fees.

Are my documents secure?

Absolutely. We take data protection and privacy extremely seriously. All your documents and personal information are protected using enterprise-grade encryption — both in transit (as information is uploaded) and at rest (while stored on our secure servers). Your data remains strictly private to you and the family members you explicitly choose to invite, and it will never be shared or sold.

Can I speak to a real person?

Yes. If you need additional help, our team is here to support you. You can contact us directly, and we'll help guide you to the information, resources or next steps you need. Contact us.

Do I have to be in Ireland to use Solace Aftercare?

No, you can use Solace Aftercare from anywhere in the world. While certain automated features, such as account closure tools for specific Irish utilities and institutions are tailored specifically for users in Ireland, all other guidance, digital tools, and grief support resources are fully accessible and usable globally.

Can I share access with another family member?

Yes. You can invite family members or co-executors to access your Aftercare portal so you can share tasks, review progress, and manage details together.

Pricing & billing

What does it cost to use The Solace?

It’s free to create a memorial. Upgrading to a premium Memorial (€49) gives you richer tributes, video, donations, and private messages. Aftercare (€149) includes everything in the Memorial, plus practical support, a secure document vault, and an emotional support programme. See the pricing page for a full comparison.

What happens to a free memorial over time?

Free memorials are hosted and editable for 1 year. After 12 months, the memorial becomes static (view-only) and remains hosted on the platform as a lasting memorial, but can no longer be edited unless upgraded. Upgrading to a paid memorial unlocks lifetime editing and guarantees perpetual hosting.

Is this a subscription?

Memorial and Aftercare plans are a one-time payment, not a recurring subscription.

Privacy

Is privacy included on the free plan?

Keeping a Memorial private is a feature of our paid plans. On the free plan, your memorial is public and displayed on thesolace.com. Upgrading to a premium memorial enables you to keep it private.

What does making a Memorial private do?

A private Memorial is visible only to the people you invite. It will not appear in public search or be viewable by anyone without access.

Can I trust The Solace with my data? Is my information private and secure?

Yes, we handle all data in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

Important documents you store in your document vault are held securely in one place, so they are easy to find when you need them and protected with the same care as the rest of your account.

Gifting

Can I give The Solace as a gift?

Yes. You can gift either a Memorial or Solace Aftercare to someone navigating grief. A Memorial gives them a lasting space to celebrate and remember their loved one, while Aftercare offers practical, legal, and emotional support to help them through what comes next. You can purchase either here.

How does gifting work?

You can purchase a plan as a gift voucher, which can be delivered digitally to the recipient or emailed to you to share personally. The recipient can create their account privately, and they will never see payment details or receipts.

Can I gift Solace Aftercare to someone?

Yes, absolutely. Gifting Solace Aftercare is one of the most thoughtful ways to support a friend or family member during a difficult time. When someone is in grief, daily admin and logistics can feel completely overwhelming. By gifting Aftercare, you aren’t just giving them a tool, you’re giving them time, peace of mind, and a clear, guided path forward so they don’t have to figure it out alone. You can purchase it here and we’ll handle the rest with complete gentleness and discretion.

Can I gift a Memorial to someone?

Yes, absolutely. Gifting a Memorial is a beautiful way to support a grieving friend or family member without adding anything to their plate. It gives them a dedicated, lasting space to gather photos, stories, and memories, ready and waiting for whenever they feel ready to begin. You can purchase it here and we’ll handle the rest with complete gentleness and discretion.

For funeral directors

My funeral director sent me a link. What do I do?

Your funeral director may have set up a Memorial on your behalf. You can visit it to add photos, tributes, and memories. To manage the page yourself, create an account and you can take it from there.

Do you work with funeral directors?

Yes. We partner with funeral directors who offer The Solace to the families they support, so a Memorial can be in place from the start.

I am a funeral director. How do I offer The Solace?
