About us

Our story

A sanctuary for honouring a life, holding memories close and finding one another through grief. Shaped by love, remembrance and personal loss.

The Solace

A place of connection when you need it most

Somewhere to come together in the days after a death, and to keep coming back to. A shared space for the people who loved someone, held gently and without pressure.

Still, open water stretching toward the horizon.

Memorials

A place to honour a life after death

Create a memorial that holds the fullness of a person: their photographs, their stories, the details that made them who they were. Somewhere their memory can be kept, added to and returned to over time.

A quiet sky at dusk settling over the land.

Remembrance

A place of storytelling and reminiscing

Grief and remembrance are rarely tidy. The Solace gives families room to share what they remember, in their own words and their own time, so a person's story stays alive in the telling.

The Solace is a project shaped by love, remembrance and personal loss. It was founded by Mark Legge as a sanctuary for those seeking solace in death.

Irish roots

We Irish pride ourselves on "doing death well". The Solace helps families find connection through their grief, and funeral directors to bring warmth to the rawness of loss. Through personalised remembrance that can be revisited anytime, reflecting the complexity and beauty of a life, a person's legacy lives on.

Portrait of Mark Legge, founder of The Solace.

When my father died, I found myself facing a landscape of grief that felt cold and detached from the emotional weight of the moment. He was a man who feasted on life, with a spirit as vast and eclectic as the landscapes we explored together. Yet the services available to honour him felt rigid, clinical, and entirely out of step with the person we were mourning. This experience planted the seed for The Solace.
